Setting up Mozonic Agent in Ableton Live

Connect the Agent to Live, understand what it does to your Set, and fix it when Live doesn’t see it. New to the Agent? Here’s what it is.

Written for Mozonic Agent 0.11.0 (Beta) and Ableton Live 12 on macOS.

What you need

  • A Mozonic Pro plan. Agent turns also use credits, and Pro includes 2,000 a month.
  • Ableton Live 12 (tested on 12.4).
  • A Mac with Apple silicon, running macOS 12 or later.

Set up in about a minute

Download Mozonic Agent, drag it to Applications, open it and accept the licence. The Connect to Ableton Live screen walks you through three steps and ticks each one off as it notices it’s done:

  1. Install the Remote Script. Click Install. It goes into your User Library’s Remote Scripts folder, and nothing else on your system is touched. If you’ve moved your User Library, the app asks you to Choose your User Library…: it’s the folder shown in Live under Settings → Library.
  2. Restart Ableton Live. Live only loads Remote Scripts when it starts. Click Restart Live for me, or quit and reopen Live yourself. Save your Set first: Live will ask if it has unsaved changes.
  3. Turn on MozonicAgent in Live. Open Live’s Settings (⌘,) → Link, Tempo & MIDI. In an empty Control Surface slot, choose MozonicAgent, and leave Input and Output on None.

Live’s status bar (bottom left) then says Mozonic Agent: ready. Click Done, sign in with your Mozonic account (the same one as Studio and the web app), and you’re in.

How it listens to your Set

When the Agent needs to hear your Set, it records it itself; you don’t press play. It records your arrangement loop if one is on (up to 32 bars). Otherwise it takes 16 bars from the first cue named chorus, drop or hook, or from the playhead. A pass is capped at about 40 seconds. You’ll see Listening to the Set… and then Measuring….

It records through temporary tracks named ⌁ Mozonic capture and deletes them afterwards. Those additions and deletions appear in Live’s undo history. Don’t stop the transport or move the playhead while it’s listening.

Edits, undo and history

Proposed changes arrive as a card: Accept (1 undo step), Modify to adjust it in words first, or Decline. Accepted edits are grouped into one Live undo step. With Verify on, the Agent plays the Set again after applying and tells you what actually changed.

History (⋯ → History, or the history icon under the message box) lists every edit the Agent applied. Expand one to Revert it, or toggle A (before) / B (after) to compare. History reverts values; for tracks or clips that were created or deleted, use Live’s own undo.

Auto-apply (off by default) lands edits as soon as a turn ends; Live’s undo takes them back.

What it can and can't change

Can: volume, pan, mute, solo and arm; sends; device parameters and on/off; EQ Eight bands; adding or removing native Live devices; creating and deleting audio, MIDI and return tracks; tempo and time signature; Session-view MIDI clips and notes.

Can’t yet: load third-party plugins, edit Arrangement-view clips, warp audio, write automation, or generate audio. It reads your scale and cue points but doesn’t change them.

Troubleshooting

Stuck on “Waiting for Live…”. Live is running, but the Agent can’t reach the script. Check, in order:

  1. You restarted Live after installing the script.
  2. MozonicAgent is selected in a Control Surface slot (Settings → Link, Tempo & MIDI).
  3. Live’s status bar says Mozonic Agent: ready. If it says “could not open port 17999”, something else is using that port. Quit Live, make sure no other copy is running, and reopen it.

MozonicAgent isn’t in the Control Surface list. Restart Live. If it still isn’t there, the script failed to load. Use open Live’s log on the setup screen (or open ~/Library/Preferences/Ableton/Live <version>/Log.txt) and send it to support.

“Not connected”. Live isn’t running, or it quit. Open Live and any Set; the screen updates by itself.

“Mozonic Agent for Ableton Live requires a Pro subscription” (MOZ-AI-0018). Your account isn’t on Pro. Upgrade, then try again.

“Out of credits”. Buy a credit pack from the strip that opens, or wait for next month’s allowance. Credits appear once payment settles.

“Recorded only X of the Y beats asked for”. The transport stopped or the playhead moved while it was listening. Ask again and leave Live alone until the pass finishes.

A capture “produced no audio file”. Check that the track’s output is routed to the master and that Exclusive Arm is off in Live’s settings.

Remove the Agent

  1. In Live’s Settings → Link, Tempo & MIDI, set the MozonicAgent slot back to None.
  2. Delete the MozonicAgent folder from ~/Music/Ableton/User Library/Remote Scripts/ (or wherever your User Library is; Show folder on the setup screen opens it).
  3. Restart Live, and drag Mozonic Agent from Applications to the Trash.

About the Beta

The Agent is in Beta, and it updates itself in the background, installing when you quit. Expect rough edges. When something breaks, tell us what you asked for, what happened, and include the Agent’s log (companion.log in its Application Support folder) and Live’s Log.txt. See the Beta terms.

Something here doesn’t match what you see? Tell support — include your app version and what you were doing.
